Enhancement Projects
for the Monastery
Since 2008, the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle in Cividale has been the focus of major restoration and enhancement projects linked to the UNESCO site “Longobards in Italy – Places of the Power (568–774 A.D.)”. For centuries, many areas of the monastery were closed to the public. The recent work has made most of the complex accessible again and has created new visitor routes connecting the Tempietto Longobardo, the monastery, and the old town centre
The aim is to strengthen the role of the Tempietto within the town and to imagine a new future for the monastery’s spaces. Given the richness and quality of its rooms, the monastery has the potential to become a “museum of itself”. Work is also under way to reinforce its role as a cultural hub, with plans for a future that brings together a museum, a cultural centre, and a hub for the local community.
